Hazel
Markus
Sep 16, 1929 — Sep 23, 2026
Hazel Margaret Markus passed away peacefully at Buffalo Grace Manor on September 23, 2026, at the age of 97.
Hazel was born on September 16, 1929 to Chris and Bertha Peterson. She was raised in Nobleford, where she met her sweetie, Albert. They married in 1949 and built a wonderful life together in Lethbridge. Their home was always an open door, filled with food(!), family, and friends at all hours.
Hazel loved her family fiercely and never lost her passion for cards and the casino. Whether it was 1000, 31, or poker, she was always ready for a game and enjoyed many long nights around the card table with family and friends.
Hazel is lovingly remembered by her daughter Barb Nast; sons Larry Markus (Gisele) and Leonard Markus; grandchildren—Scott Nast (McKenna), Lisa Nast (Brad), Tyler Nast (Kristi); Wes Markus (Chelsea), Ava Markus (Jamie); and Ashley Markus (Aaron); great-grandchildren—Ayden, Addy, Anna, Nora, Everest, Heidi, Lola, Noah; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was predeceased by her husband Albert; sisters Evelyn Brady (Harley), Alveda Markus (Karl), and Doreen Hirt (Gerald); brothers Stan (Pat) and Marvin (Evelyn) Peterson; son-in-law John Nast; grandson Chad Markus; nephew Dwane Markus; brothers-in-law Hank (Ruth) and Pete Markus, sister-in-law Clara Thompson; and so many dear family members and friends.
The Peterson family was a tight-knit group, and her sisters remained her best friends throughout her life. We take comfort in knowing Hazel is once again reunited with Albert, her sisters, and her mother. We can only imagine the card game that is already underway.
We thank the staff at Buffalo Grace Manor for their care of Hazel over these last two years.
A private celebration of Hazel's life will be held. In lieu of flowers, enjoy a game of cards.
