Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of James "Jim" Harman, 76 announce that he passed away suddenly after a brief battle with cancer.

He was a brother, husband, uncle, papa and friend. Jim will be remembered for his abundant kindness, overwhelming generosity and his sage wisdom by all who knew him.

He is survived by his sisters, Annie (David) Squire, Lena (Malcolm) MacDonald; his brothers, Paul (Joyce) Harman, Frank (Kathy) Harman; as well as his many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces & nephews. He is also survived by his stepsons, Kelly (Maureen) and Jason (Angela); as well as his cherished grandchildren, Shaun, Kayla (Agustin) and Tyler (Jill) McConnell, who all held a special place in his heart.

He was predeceased by wife, Gail McConnell; and his parents, Thomas & Charlotte Harman; as well as his brother, Fred Harman.

Jim was born in the Fiji Islands in the town Vatukola on August 1, 1950. His younger years were spent at Vautkola Primary School. After attending Ba Methodist High School, Jim first received his civil engineering red seal in 1972 at Derrick Technical Institute in Suva. In November of 1975, he arrived in Canada with his brother, Paul, where he worked at Fording Coal Ltd. in Elkford, BC as journeyman plumber/pipefitter and then again in 1981. In-between that time, he worked on the R/V Vema research vessel as an oiler. Then, in 1988, he received his diploma from NAIT in engineering design & drafting technology and eventually ended up working for HMW Construction, CPL, Graham Construction, Flint Corp. and JV Driver as an estimator until retiring in 2016.

Jim called Edmonton home where he built a beautiful life with his wife, Gail. Together, they loved to travel the globe, with Cuba holding a special place in his heart. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends; reminiscing about his adventures and never shying away from telling the story of his life. Jim also loved to shop, always looking for the best deals, with his wife not far behind saying “Don’t be cheap, Jim”.

In his final year, he relocated to Lethbridge where he spent his days relaxing in the company of his family before peacefully passing away.

Jim's Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
