Charles “Chic” Joseph Calderwood, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 20, 2026.
Chic was born in Claresholm, Alberta, on March 19, 1939, to the late James and Cecilia Calderwood, who farmed near Granum. Known for his tall stature, good looks, love of basketball, and knack for fixing, building, and tinkering with just about anything. Chic also had a lifelong love of cars and speed—occasionally leading to a friendly game of outsmarting the local authorities to avoid a speeding ticket.
With his mischievous spirit, curious mind, and wonderful sense of humour, Chic could make just about anyone laugh and was never afraid to take on a new adventure. This spirit led him to northern Alberta, where he worked as a surveyor for Frontier. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Linda David, and together they moved to Granum to farm and begin their life together, soon welcoming daughters Marla and Yvonne.
Chic believed in hard work, determination, and leading by example. Always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, or teach someone how to do things the right way, Chic was a natural mentor.
He also knew life was meant to be enjoyed—especially when it involved all the toys. Whether a new vehicle, piece of equipment, boat, or latest adventure, Chic knew how to make the most of it and bring everyone along for the ride.
His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to Calgary, where he continued embracing new opportunities and challenges. Through life’s victories and hardships, Chic faced each day with love, humour, determination, and a belief in making the most of whatever came his way.
Whether tinkering in his meticulously kept garage or travelling with Linda in their motorhome, Chic always found joy in life’s adventures.
He delighted in bringing grandchildren Briana, Parker, and Taylor along for the ride, sharing his stories, jokes, and (albeit sometimes a little inappropriate) unmistakable wit.
In recent years, Chic and Linda moved to Lethbridge to be closer to their great-grandchildren, Zella and his “birthday buddy,” Townes, where they enjoyed precious time with the youngest generation.
Above all, Chic will be remembered for the life he built with Linda, the family he cherished, and the many people he helped, taught, and encouraged. Always ready for another adventure, a good story, or a good laugh, he leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of humour, wisdom, generosity, and love that will carry on for generations.
