Don Behrens

Donald Elwood Behrens, 82, passed away December 31, 2014 at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, AB. He was born on February 24, 1932 in Pierre, SD, USA to parents Frederick and Dessie Behrens. He married Joyce Lou Ann Christenson on September 2, 1955, Riverfalls, WI, USA.

He is survived by his six children, Fred (Louisa) Behrens, Jodi (James Jacquez) Behrens, Frank (Jackqueline) Behrens, Janice (Bill Pollett) Behrens, Terry Behrens, and Traci (Bob) Frank. Twelve grandchildren: Caleb, Stephanie, Daniel, Shayla, Tess, Derek, Dylan, Tahnee, Jessie, Emma, Mahogany, and Maggie and six great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents Frederick and Dessie Behrens, and siblings, Wendell Behrens, Bonnie (Harry) Shaw and Kenneth Behrens. He passed away while suffering from ARDS/pneumonia. He fought hard right to the end. His wife Joyce of 59 years, family and beloved friend Reverend Larry Hankinson were at his bedside.

After leaving his hometown of Tracy, Minnesota he entered into the service where he served on aircraft carriers for four years during the Korean War.

Don received his teaching credential in Mankato State and began his career as a teacher in Minnesota. Don and Joyce headed north to Lethbridge in 1966 for a teaching position at Picture Butte.

He was a teacher, coach, mentor, lay minister, amateur radio operator, singer, actor (Fiddler on the Roof), lover of the arts, playwright (The Year Lethbridge Won the Grey Cup), book critic for the Lethbridge Herald and has an op-ed piece in the Temple City Star in Cardston. He was a proud and loud cheerleader for all activities that his six kids participated in. Don was an adventurer and a seeker of knowledge and experiences. His favourite place to live and teach was at St Mary's on the Blood Reserve in Alberta. Don was passionate about his family, community, religion, politics and sports especially the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Green Bay Packers. HE WAS A RENAISSANCE MAN.

The family would like to thank the staff at Chinook Regional Hospital ICU for taking such great care of him in his final moments.

A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church in Cardston, AB on Saturday January 3, 2015 at 12 noon. Condolences may be forwarded to bobtrac@telus.net
